MOGADISHU, Somalia [SMN] – ATMIS at this time concluded the primary section of troop withdrawal with the handover of Mogadishu’s Aljazeera One Coaching Ahead Working Base (FOB) and Jubaland State’s Gherille FOB to the Somali Safety Forces (SSF).
The previous, manned by UPDF, was handed over to the SSF by ATMIS Sector One Commander, Brig. Gen. Peter Omola, whereas the latter was handed over to the Jubaland Safety Power by KDF Gherille FOB Commander, Maj. Shitanda Terence Soita.
This brings the whole variety of FOBs handed over to SSF to 6, whereas the Marka Ayub facility was closed. ATMIS is predicted to withdraw 2000 troops by the tip of June in step with UN Safety Council resolutions 2628 and 2670.
ATMIS is withdrawing 2,000 troops by the tip of June 2023 in compliance with UN Safety Council Resolutions 2628(22) and 2670(22) which require ATMIS to steadily switch safety duties to the Somali safety forces.
The AU mission’s Performing Power Commander, Maj. Gen. Marius Ngendabanka emphasised that the drawdown of 2000 ATMIS troopers is not going to impression on safety for key authorities installations and main inhabitants centres if the SSF takes over.
