Mogadishu, April 19, 2025 (SMN) – A heated session of Somalia’s Home of the Individuals resulted in chaos on Saturday after Speaker Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur (Adan Madobe) tabled a controversial movement regarding the dismissal of MP Abdullahi Hashi Abib.
The session erupted into shouting and dysfunction as opposition lawmakers, angered by the sooner removing of Abib’s parliamentary immunity, disrupted proceedings. A number of MPs broke parliamentary microphones in protest, Shabelle TV’s reporter stated.
Unable to revive order, Speaker Madobe abruptly adjourned the session, declaring the sitting closed amid the uproar.
MP Saddam Mahmoud Abdi accused the Speaker of violating parliamentary procedures, claiming his actions amounted to a breach of the Home’s inside guidelines.
“Speaker Madobe has failed in his duties and overstepped his mandate,” stated Saddam. “We are actually engaged on a movement to take away him from workplace.”
Opposition MPs, who led the disruption, have condemned the transfer to strip Abib of his immunity, calling it politically motivated and illegal. They argue the choice contravenes parliamentary guidelines and was taken on account of private or political pursuits after Abib repeatedly didn’t attend classes.
Speaker Madobe, who’s a detailed ally to President Hassan Sheikh, has defended his resolution, insisting that the MP had violated the foundations governing the conduct of the legislature.
The incident underscores mounting tensions inside Somalia’s legislature amid rising political divisions within the Horn of Africa, which is heading to the polling stations in 2026.
